Include your app version and build, device and macOS versions, the exact error, and the steps that caused it. Say whether you were on Wi-Fi or cellular and whether Tailscale was connected. Remove private project content from screenshots and diagnostic excerpts.
Do not send passwords, API keys, pairing QR codes, device credentials or complete private logs. A pairing code grants access to your Mac and should only be scanned by a device you control.
Connect your devices
- Keep your Mac awake and start VibeCommand and its Mac companion service.
- Install and sign in to Tailscale on the Mac and mobile device, then connect both to your private network. The current setup flow does not install or sign in to Tailscale for you.
- On the Mac, open Connection Settings and create a pairing QR code.
- On your iPhone or iPad, choose Scan Mac Pairing Code and scan that code. Pair each device separately. If the invitation expires, create a new one.
- Use Test Connection. If your saved pairing no longer works, pair again with a fresh QR code.
Pairing creates a device credential automatically; you do not need to copy an AI provider API key. The Mac must remain reachable while you work remotely. Advanced connection options depend on your network configuration.
Setup with a coding agent
After installing the matching beta Mac companion and starting its backend, you can ask a local coding agent to help configure it through the VibeCommand CLI. Start with the read-only commands in Getting started. The CLI reports the running backend's capabilities, installed agents and next setup steps.
The setup flow can configure VibeCommand's background service and, with your approval, install tmux using an existing Homebrew installation. Claude Code needs tmux for its interactive terminal; Codex does not. Agent sign-in, Tailscale sign-in and macOS permission prompts still need your attention. This is not a one-command installer for a fresh Mac.
Mac Assistant
Open Mac Assistant at the top of the project list, labelled “Remote help for this Mac”. Choose an installed agent and describe the Mac-level task. It starts in your Mac home folder instead of a single project folder and can reach other locations allowed by the agent's configuration, macOS permissions and your instructions.
Use it to investigate disk usage, read accessible logs, inspect processes or prepare a new project. It is not a separate administrator account or a sandbox around your home folder. VibeCommand does not grant it permission to bypass macOS or the installed agent's controls. Some system requests must be approved on the Mac.
Use the active conversation's Stop control to interrupt an agent run. Stopping does not undo completed edits or reverse commands that already ran. Review the result and use your normal backups or Git workflow when needed. Mac Assistant has no project LIVE server; open a project to use web or Simulator LIVE.
See Mac Assistant for its workflow and scope.
Keep your Mac awake
Your Mac must stay awake and reachable for remote work. Display sleep is fine: the screen can be off while the Mac keeps running. System sleep pauses the machine and can break the connection. VibeCommand cannot keep working on a sleeping or powered-off Mac.
On a MacBook connected to power, look in System Settings → Battery → Options for the option to prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. On a desktop Mac, look in Energy (Energy Saver on some macOS versions). See Apple's sleep settings guide for the controls available on your model.
For a temporary session, open Terminal on the Mac and run caffeinate -i. It prevents idle system sleep while that command is running; stop it with Control-C when finished. It does not guarantee operation with a closed laptop lid or override a manual Sleep command. Amphetamine is a separate Mac app that can manage keep-awake sessions if you prefer a graphical control.
If the Mac sleeps, the app may show a failed connection or stop receiving progress and LIVE frames. Wake the Mac, let its network and companion service reconnect, then use Test Connection and reopen the same conversation or project. Check its current state before sending the task again. Test your setup over cellular before leaving the Mac unattended.
Tailscale and battery use
Tailscale creates a VPN connection and can remain active in the background even when VibeCommand is closed. Its VPN On Demand settings control automatic connection. Turning it off can make your Mac unreachable from the phone.
The VPN has its own battery and network cost, which varies with traffic and configuration. Tailscale documents increased battery use, especially when an exit node carries all device traffic; see its battery troubleshooting guide. We do not promise a fixed or negligible battery cost.
VibeCommand's agents, builds and project processes run on the Mac. The phone handles the interface, messages and connection; an open LIVE preview also handles continuous preview traffic and rendering. Close LIVE when you no longer need it.
Use an agent
Install and sign in to your chosen coding agent on the Mac first. In a project, select the agent under More, return to Chat and send a task. Codex uses the existing ChatGPT login managed by the installed Codex CLI. Claude Code uses its own existing login and an interactive terminal through tmux.
VibeCommand works in the selected original project folder. Changes made by the agent affect those files. It follows the installed agent's configuration and relays permission requests. A missing login must be completed on the Mac. VibeCommand does not provide an AI subscription or the ChatGPT Remote interface.
If LIVE takes time to open
A project's first build or dependency installation can take several minutes. Check the project's status and output before restarting it. A disconnected phone does not by itself mean the build failed. Restore the network connection and reopen the same project to check its current state.
Web LIVE needs a running development server on the Mac. Simulator LIVE also needs Xcode, a compatible Simulator runtime and the Mac input helper for touch interaction. Any required macOS permissions must be allowed on the Mac. If the Mac is asleep, offline or still waiting for a system prompt, the phone cannot complete that setup for it.
Use Stop to end work you started. Stop All stops VibeCommand-owned project and Simulator resources while keeping the companion connection available; it does not delete project files.
Archive, restore or delete a chat
Open Chat → History and use the chat's actions menu. Archive moves a chat into Archived; Restore Chat returns it to the active list. Archiving keeps the conversation.
Delete… opens a confirmation before permanently removing that chat and its VibeCommand conversation and terminal history. Finish or stop an active run first. Deletion cannot be undone in VibeCommand. Project files and the coding agent's own separate history remain. Other devices update their history when they reconnect; an offline device may retain an older local copy until then.
Privacy and permissions
Open Settings → Privacy & Security → How VibeCommand handles data for the available storage controls and public links. Controls for local conversations, completed Mac run content, uploads, logs and temporary files have separate scopes and confirmations.
The camera is used when you scan a pairing QR code. Attachments and project icons are selected explicitly. Notifications are optional. Apple and macOS control system permissions; VibeCommand cannot override a permission denied by the operating system.
Read the Privacy Policy for details about local storage, third-party services and data requests.
Third-party services
AI providers, Tailscale, Git services, Xcode and the services used by your projects are separate products. Their accounts, availability, subscriptions and privacy practices are controlled by their respective providers. VibeCommand is an independent application and is not endorsed by those providers.
